Sienna Miller Praises Younger Men’s Respect for Women: A Reflection on Generational Differences and Her Relationship with Oli Green

EntertainmentSienna Miller Praises Younger Men’s Respect for Women: A Reflection on Generational Differences and Her Relationship with Oli Green

Sienna Miller is a 42-year-old British actress known particularly in films such as “Layer Cake” and “Alfie.” She has been outspoken lately on her relationship with 27-year-old actor Oli Green, outlining generational differences that she perceives in men’s attitudes toward women. It’s those candid reflections that have really made for a number of pointed conversations regarding contemporary relationships, respect, and how relations between the sexes are changing.

Miller and Green, who have a daughter born in January, met at a Halloween party in 2021 in something of a chance encounter. Though she had some trepidation initially due to their 15-year age gap, Miller was quickly smitten with Green. “I didn’t expect to take it seriously and then quite quickly, I fell in love,” she told Harper’s Bazaar in an interview. “I wasn’t like, I’m gonna get a younger boyfriend. It was more, F***! Why are you young? That’s so annoying.”

Miller, who has been scrutinized time and again for her highly publicized relationships with Jude Law and Tom Sturridge, has indeed come to see how much differently men her age men like Green, in particular respect women as compared to the older generation. “It’s specific to him, he is very wise and well-adjusted, but I do believe it’s also that generation,” she said. “They have grown up with a slightly more level playing field. I see it in his female friends as well as in the men.”

This is such a contrast to Miller’s earlier experiences with older partners. Well, reflecting on her tumultuous relationship with Jude Law, which began in 2004 when she was just 23 and he was 34 years old Miller describes it as “the most surreal experience.” It was a relationship dotted with the highly publicized case of a cheating scandal by Law, pictured with his children’s nanny. “It was in many ways the most exciting moment. I just started working and I was in a big film and in love with this idol, and very, very happy, but the flip side of it was so dark, so quickly,” she said.

Despite everything, Miller has said that she has learned from past relationships. She has been very vocal about how crazy and helpless she felt during those early years in the industry a feeling many women can relate to when navigating fame and public scrutiny. “It’s interesting, being older now, and having been raised in that moment, learning from people who are younger about how clear they are in their boundaries, having that self-assuredness and self-advocacy, having ‘no’ in the repertoire in a way that we just weren’t encouraged to have,” she explained.

Miller’s appreciation for Green’s maturity and respectful nature of his generation is reflected in how much she values motherhood and personal growth. The birth of her baby girl has been “cathartic, healing,” she told Harper’s Bazaar, adding that it has really grounded her in a way that is very representative of how life should be. “I’m in heaven. It’s been a cathartic, healing experience, which sounds woo-woo, but it’s grounded in a way that reflects the life that I want to be living.”

The actress, who also shares her 11-year-old daughter with Tom Sturridge, has spoken about being judged over the age gap in her current relationship. “Me being the older woman in a partnership with a younger person, or being pregnant over 40 and that that’s irresponsible and the poor child it’s such double standards, and I think it’s so unquestioned in people’s minds,” she said on Vogue’s podcast. “It’s absurd. I just find that judgment, it’s so one-sided, and it’s so sad.”

Miller, however, believes that on top of societal pressures, love cannot be legislated. “I don’t think you can legislate on matters of the heart. I certainly never have been able to,” she said. Her experiences show a change in how relationships are looked at, and the understanding and respect required by the generations.

Looking ahead to the release of Kevin Costner’s Western, “Horizon: An American Saga,” in which she stars as Frances, Miller keeps with her the ins and outs learned from a life marked by freshness and complexity. “The more interesting and complicated your life is, the better you’ll end up being,” reflected Miller.

Miller’s story, one of love, heartache, and self-growth, testifies to the altering nature of relationships and to the role respect and understanding play today in modern society. In her reflections, she invites us to have thoughts around generational shifts and their consequences for our way of relating with one another regarding romantic love most of all.
